Campaign for Changing the Way You See Dementia By renaming ”痴呆症”
In Hong Kong, the Chinese name of dementia is “痴呆症”. In certain sense, this term carries the meanings of “lost of mind”, “speaking nonsense” and even “insanity”. The negative connotation often defeats the body and spirit of people who unfortunately have the condition. JCCPA sets the vision to dispel the negative shadow overcastting the dementia population. We are determined to break the stereotype against dementia in the Chinese population. A city-wide campaign “Changing the Way You See Dementia – Renaming Competition” is launched. The campaign aims to overhaul the current perception of dementia that is haunting people of all ages, particularly due to the biased name of dementia in Chinese. Please join us to fight against the stigma of dementia. For details of the campaign, please visit http://www.jccpa.org.hk/c-renaming.html (Chinese version only).

Survey details were to be elaborated in a press conference which was held on World Alzheimer’s Day, 21 September. In the survey, over 200 final year undergraduates from 4 different health and social care disciplines (including medical, occupational therapy, nursing and social work) responded to the questionnaires of the survey.
